Myofunctional Therapy
Myofunctional therapy uses therapeutic techniques and oral appliances to support healthy oral habits, including proper tongue positioning and function.
Dental services for children at Maidstone Dental are provided by our general dentist. Our dentist is not a licensed specialist in pediatric dentistry.
What is myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy focuses on the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue, and the habits that affect how they function. In children, oral habits such as tongue thrust, mouth breathing, or improper resting tongue position can influence jaw development, tooth alignment, and speech over time.
Therapy may include exercises to strengthen and retrain the muscles involved in swallowing, breathing, and resting posture, along with oral appliances when appropriate. The goal is to support healthier function rather than to address a single symptom in isolation.
When it may be recommended
Myofunctional therapy may be discussed when a child shows signs of altered oral function, such as persistent mouth breathing, difficulty with certain speech sounds, or habits that affect how the tongue rests or moves during swallowing. It may also complement other dental care, including orthodontic treatment or care following a frenectomy.
Whether myofunctional therapy is appropriate is assessed individually. We review your child's history, clinical findings, and any concerns you have as parents before recommending a plan.
What to expect
Treatment typically involves a series of visits where exercises and techniques are introduced and practiced. Consistency at home is an important part of the process, and parents often play a role in helping children follow through with recommended exercises between appointments.
Progress is monitored over time, and the plan may be adjusted based on how your child responds. In some cases, referral to a speech-language pathologist or other specialist may be appropriate as part of coordinated care.
