Safe Amalgam Removal

Specialized protocols designed to carefully remove existing metal amalgam fillings while minimizing exposure during the process.

What is safe amalgam removal?

Safe Amalgam Removal follows specialized protocols designed to carefully remove existing metal amalgam fillings while minimizing exposure during the process. These protocols include steps such as high-volume suction, isolation techniques, and protective measures intended to reduce particulate and vapor during removal.

Amalgam removal may be recommended when a filling is worn, cracked, or no longer functioning as intended, or when a patient requests replacement with a different restorative material. Dr. Erin Ellis evaluates each case individually to determine whether removal and replacement are clinically appropriate.

What to expect

During your consultation, your dentist will examine the existing filling, discuss replacement options, and explain the removal protocol. The procedure itself is performed using established dental techniques with additional precautions designed to minimize exposure during amalgam removal.

After removal, the tooth is typically restored with a replacement material such as a tooth-colored composite or other restorative option suited to the tooth's location and function. Your dentist will review material choices and the expected steps at your appointment.
