Welcome to Our Dental Family

We want you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. Settle into a seat near the fireplace and enjoy a coffee, tea, juice, or bottle of water while we prepare for your appointment.

Your first visit is designed to give you enough time to get to know our team, understand your oral health, and ask questions without feeling rushed or pressured.

Miles apart. Neighbours at heart. Patients travel from communities across the region to Maidstone Dental.

How Your First Visit Works

  1. 1

    Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Please plan to arrive approximately 10 minutes before your appointment. This will give you time to settle in and complete any remaining forms in the patient lounge.

Your first appointment is usually longer than a regular checkup. We recommend allowing approximately 90 minutes, although the actual time may vary depending on your individual needs.

  2. 2

    Meet Your Treatment Coordinator

You will begin your visit with Jackie, our Treatment Coordinator. She will take the time to learn about your dental concerns, previous experiences, goals, and what you hope to achieve through your care.

This is also an opportunity to let us know if you feel nervous about dental treatment or if there is anything we can do to make your visit more comfortable.

  3. 3

    Review Your Health History

Our team will review your medical and dental history, including:

    • Current medications and supplements
    • Medication or environmental allergies
    • Existing medical conditions
    • Previous dental treatment
    • Current dental concerns
    • Any history of dental anxiety

Your medical history helps Dr. Ellis plan dental care that is appropriate for your overall health.

  4. 4

    Complete Your Baseline X-Rays

If we do not have recent and suitable dental X-rays from another dental office, our team may recommend taking new images.

X-rays allow Dr. Ellis to assess areas that cannot be fully examined visually, including between the teeth, below the gumline, and around the roots and supporting bone. These images also become part of your baseline dental record.

If you recently had X-rays taken elsewhere, please ask your previous dental office to forward them to us before your appointment.

  5. 5

    Receive a Comprehensive Dental Examination

Dr. Ellis will complete a thorough assessment of your:

    • Teeth and existing dental work
    • Gums and supporting tissues
    • Bite and jaw function
    • Tongue, cheeks, lips, and other oral tissues
    • Areas of pain, sensitivity, or concern

The examination will also include an oral cancer screening. Dr. Ellis will review the findings from your clinical examination together with your X-rays.

  6. 6

    Meet Your Dental Hygienist

When appropriate, you will meet with one of our dental hygienists for an assessment and professional dental cleaning.

Whether the cleaning can be completed during your first appointment will depend on your oral health, the type of cleaning required, and the amount of time available. If your needs are more extensive or Dr. Ellis would like to discuss certain findings first, we may schedule your cleaning for a separate appointment.

  7. 7

    Review Your Treatment Options

After the examination, Dr. Ellis will explain the findings in clear and practical terms. If treatment is recommended, we will discuss:

    • What was found
    • The available treatment options
    • The benefits and limitations of each option
    • How urgently treatment may be required
    • What could happen if treatment is delayed
    • The estimated fees and available insurance information

You will then have additional time with Jackie to review your treatment plan, discuss scheduling, and ask questions.

Our goal is for you to leave feeling informed and confident about making the decisions that are right for you. There is no pressure to proceed before you are ready.

  8. 8

    Plan Your Follow-Up Care

Before you leave, we will discuss the next steps. This may include:

    • A routine checkup and cleaning
    • A follow-up hygiene appointment
    • A restorative treatment appointment
    • A consultation for a specific concern
    • Monitoring an area over time

Our team will help you select appointment times that work with your schedule.

After Your First Visit

After your initial appointment, you will be added to our continuing-care system. We will contact you when you are due for your next dental examination or cleaning.

Most patients return approximately every three to six months, although the recommended interval may be shorter or longer depending on your oral health and Dr. Ellis’s recommendations.

If follow-up treatment is recommended, our team will assist with scheduling and answer any questions you may have about your treatment, expected fees, or insurance coverage.
